Great people working together to make great products

Family, Quality, and Success

After serving in the Air Force, our founders Aloysius (Al) and Frank Korte returned to Michigan eager to find work. The brothers were given an opportunity to work for Superior Doors, where they were able to learn and establish their lives. In 1965, Superior Doors went out of business. Faced with the prospect of feeding their growing families, they bet on themselves and founded A&F Wood in a small warehouse in Plymouth.

Al and Frank’s bet paid off and the business began to grow. Together with a few employees, the brothers worked hard, prioritizing craftsmanship and value. The resulting success required more space, so the business expanded to a new building in Royal Oak. Unfortunately, the good times wouldn’t last forever. Disaster struck in 1983 when a fire completely destroyed the business.

Despite this disheartening setback, the Kortes believed in what they had built. From a building nearby with no running water, they rebuilt in 1984. Just three short years later, they outgrew their facility and moved into a brand new building in Brighton. During this exciting time A&F became a family affair, with Al’s three sons working alongside their father and uncle. In 1992, the second generation of Kortes took over the business.

Meaningful work for all

From the very beginning, Al and Frank believed that everyone who was willing to put in the work deserves a chance to succeed like they did. Over the years they’ve lived by this philosophy, striving to make A&F Wood an accessible, inclusive, and supportive workplace. Today we’re proud to continue their work to make A&F Wood a place where everyone can find meaningful work. As a family business, we know that when our family grows, our business does too.
